The goal of sustainablility is to minimize the impact that new or existing man-made structures have on the environment, now and in the future. All of Rhinebeck Architecture's principals, architects and designers are LEED certified and in collaboration with our clients, we strive to incorporate sustainable elements in the design of our projects. During the design process we review building and site infrastructure to recommend opportunities for improved sustainability including analysis of payback timelines. Many projects sacrifice good design in order to met some level of sustainability, with proper planning, both can be achieved. We use LEED standards and high performance guildlines to design buildings that provide a healthy and safe environment, cost less to operate and help protect the environment.
As Principal, John provides over 27 years of Architectural and construction experience to each project. His passion is the adaptive re-use of existing buildings to inspire community spirit and bring, "those great old buildings" back to life.
He feels that it's important for his staff to have in-depth experience with construction techniques and practices and encourages everyone to get "out on the site" to see how buildings go together. The collaboration between Client and Architect is critical to the success of any project and John values the relationships made over the years with so many old and new clients.
In his spare time, John keeps busy renovating houses, riding his motorcycle and helping out in the community. He is a certified ERT (Early Response Team) member of the United Methodist Committee on Relief and has been trained to respond to natural or civil disasters.

Rhinebeck Architecture and Planning PC provides professional design services for commercial and educational clients. Since our inception, we have had the honor of designing and maintaining many buildings and facilities in the Hudson Valley region. Our expertise has carried us to other parts of New York State and into New England. We offer services to the greater Hudson Valley, the Capital District, Wechester County, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Over the years, we have established relationships with the best consulting professionals in the industry and include civil, mechanical, electrical, structural design as part of our design services. We often engage acousticians, landscape architects, theater consultants, food service consultants, swimming pool specialists and cost estimators to provide an additional range of design services.
Before the excavator starts, before the documents are prepared for construction and before the color sketches are created, we assist our clients in creatively planning their project. We offer Master Planning services for large facilities, Feasibility Studies and Preliminary Design to develop ideas into buildable concepts. We review available information, prepare alternate studies, examine existing buildings and sites. We help clients choose the best available location and orientation for their buildings. Using the client's budget as a guide, we develop scenarios that show various ways to realize their ideas. Planning a project is often as simple as asking: What is the Need? And developing the most effective and economical solution to that need.
When designing new structures and additions, our direction is often to provide a design that fits into the context of the neighborhood, the campus, or the countryside. We choose colors and shapes that harmonize with their surroundings and when necessary, make bold statements announcing the entrance or the major feature of a building. We are experienced with renovating and adding to historic structures, using modern materials and construction techniques that collaborate with historic buildings without overpowering the original design.
We design interiors, that provide color and texture to enhance the building's appearance to delight, soothe and engage the users.
Our design work would not be successful without careful detailing and construction. Understanding the physical nature of the sun, wind, water and temperature is essential to detailing buildings that continue to serve their occupants.
Buildings and their sites are investments and like any investment they must be maintained to retain value over time. Facilities deteriorate, building systems often outlive their useful life and replacement parts may be difficult to obtain. Poorly designed building systems fail unexpectedly and major storms can cause damage. Energy costs, hazardous materials remediation and changing building and occupancy codes require that buildings be continuously updated.
With our knowledge of building systems and new technology, we can assist you in maintaining your buildings, your site and your campus. We can help you review what exisists, determine its condition and develop a long and short term plan that will maintain and improve your facilities on an ongoing basis. Combined with our Master Plan services, we can provide you with the information you need to make logical and economical decisions about developing and maintaining your properties.

Hudson Junior High School was designed as an addition to the existing senior high school , housing students displaced as a result of district wide grade realignments.
The primary programmatic goal of the design was to create a facility that was physically attached to the existing school building, but provided complete separation between the junior and senior high school students.
The self contained, two story addition, consists of two educational wings, a gymnasium, kitchen and cafeteria and is organized about a central atrium. Shared and administrative spaces are located on the first floor while the second floor houses classrooms. The Atrium is flooded with daylight and doubles as an art gallery and student gathering space.
A secondary design goal was to provide the school complex with a unified, contemporary identity along the street facade. The addition envelopes the origional building's 1970's architecture and invites entry by way of three glass towers. The Junior High School and the Senior High School entrance towers are separated by a public Event Entry. Adjacent community spaces provide a buffer zone between the two schools and can be isolated for evening and weekend usage.
The project recieved the 2009 Award of Merit from the Eastern New York Chapter of the AIA . Hudson Junior High School was also published in American School and University
Magazine as an outstanding design. And Learning by Design.
